How It Works

How It Works

Getting started with a Tinkolo STEM kit is straightforward — no prior electronics experience needed, no special tools required, and no complicated setup. Whether your child is 8 or 15, our process is designed to take them from unboxing to a working, programmable project in just a few sessions. Here's what to expect.

Step 1: Choose Your Kit

Browse our collection of five hands-on STEM kits and pick the one that matches your child's age and interests. Not sure where to start? Here are a few quick pointers:

  • By age: Check our Age Guide for detailed recommendations based on difficulty level and build time.
  • By interest: Robotics fans love the Biped Coding Robot and Bionic Spider Robot. Science and nature kids gravitate toward the Weather Station Kit and Smart Farm IoT Kit. The Smart Home IoT Kit is a great all-rounder for any curious builder.
  • By budget: Our kits range from $69.99 to $89.99, and every order ships free. Visit our Gift Guide for recommendations organized by price.

Once you've placed your order, we'll ship it out promptly with free standard shipping right from Austin, Texas.

Step 2: Unbox & Build

When your kit arrives, everything you need is inside the box — microcontroller board, sensors, wires, structural components, and detailed instructions. No extra tools required.

  • Illustrated step-by-step guide — Every kit includes a printed instruction booklet with clear diagrams and numbered steps. We also provide online video tutorials for visual learners who prefer to follow along on screen.
  • No soldering, no glue — All connections use breadboards, jumper wires, and plug-in connectors. Assembly is entirely tool-free and completely reversible, so mistakes are easy to fix.
  • Built in sessions — Simpler kits like the Smart Home IoT Kit take about 2–3 hours. More complex kits like the Bionic Spider Robot can take 5–7 hours, spread comfortably across multiple sessions. There's no rush — building is half the fun.

Step 3: Code & Connect

Once the hardware is assembled, it's time to bring it to life with code. This is where the real learning happens.

  • Program with Arduino IDE — Our kits use Arduino-compatible boards, programmed through the free Arduino IDE software. We provide starter code that works right out of the box, so your child sees results immediately.
  • Modify and experiment — Once the starter code is running, we encourage kids to change values, add conditions, and experiment. What happens if you increase the sensor sensitivity? Can you make the robot walk faster? This tinkering is where deeper understanding develops.
  • Connect to apps and WiFi — Several of our kits (Smart Farm, Smart Home, Weather Station) use ESP32 boards with built-in WiFi. Kids can connect their projects to companion apps, monitor sensor data remotely, or even set up simple web dashboards.

Step 4: Play & Learn

The project is built and the code is running — but the learning doesn't stop there. This is just the beginning.

  • Experiment freely — Rearrange sensors, rewrite code, add new components. Our kits are designed to be open-ended platforms, not one-time builds.
  • Modify and extend — Older kids and teens can add third-party sensors, combine parts from multiple kits, or integrate their projects with other Arduino-compatible hardware.
  • Share creations — Built something cool? We love seeing what our customers create. Share your builds with us and inspire other young makers.
  • Build real skills — The Arduino programming, circuit design, and problem-solving skills your child develops are the same ones used by professional engineers. These aren't toy skills — they're real ones.

What You'll Need

Our kits include nearly everything required. The only two things you need to supply:

  • A computer — Windows, Mac, or Linux. Needed to run the Arduino IDE and upload code to the board.
  • A USB cable — Most kits include one, but having a spare USB-A to USB-C or Micro-USB cable is always helpful.

That's it. No special tools, no extra purchases, no hidden requirements. Just a computer, a cable, and a kid who's ready to build something amazing.
